SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 Conference Highlights

Featured Sessions: Staging the Endgame

Sidney Kombo-Kintombo broke down the iconic scenes-from the fiercest battles to the intertwined fates of Thanos and Tony Stark in Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel Avengers: Endgame to reveal how Weta's animators leveraged new animation toolsets and extensive experience in the MCU to portray the inevitable fate of The Avengers.

Featured Sessions: The Cyber Security Challenges for Next-Generation Mixed-Reality

Mashhuda Glencross, Jassim Happa, Anthony Steed and Taylor Beck conducted a panel discussion to discuss what challenges and opportunities there are for cyber security in next-generation mixed-reality, including issues of privacy and trust in the context of attacks, how the community can respond to these challenges, and what development is needed.

MPC Film presented the VFX of Disney's The Lion King at the Computer Animation Festival - Panel & Production Sessions.

Charlie Han, product manager for Microsoft, presented The Story of HoloLens during one of the Featured Sessions.

At the Opening Ceremony, which featured aboriginal dancers welcoming participants to SIGGRAPH Asia 2019, Tomasz Bednarz gave an overview of how SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 came to be in Australia; and Keynote Speaker Donna J. Cox presented an extraordinarily insightful presentation on 'Revolutions in Mapping the Digital Universe: Stories of Satellites, Supercomputers, and the Art of Data Visualization', during which she showcased the vivid range of work in data visualization that she is renowned for.

SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 Experiences

At the SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 Exhibition, 68 companies and brands, representing 17 countries and regions, are participating, some of which have organized Exhibitor Talks.

Visit BCEC Exhibition Hall 1 to experience these technologies, 18-20 November 2019, Brisbane, Queensland

Today, in the Experience Hall, visitors explored the XR program to discover emerging tools, such as a TouchVR haptic interface, a system that is able to recognize intermediate facial expressions; or a novel method for touch sensations that apply passive magnetic materials to subtly stimulate body hair, evoking an emotional response. The VR Theater, exclusive to Platinum Pass holders only, showcases state-of-the-art virtual reality storytelling through a 360-degree virtual environment.

At the Demoscene Party at the Exhibition Hall, one could see the history of Demoscene through Videos and hardware, hear Ziggy/Defame's "Introduction to the Demoscene" and see a C64 Demo Review, and a New School PC Demo Review by Ziggy and Abductee. There was also a workshop and a CTRIX Live Performance.

The Art Gallery engages, challenges and entertains attendees with exhibitions such as ILLUSION which explores the relationship between the body, mind, and machine by taking advantage of the brain-computer interface; and Smile, a mixed-media installation consisting of a screen in a black box, mounted on the wall. When an interactor widely smiles at it, drone-footage of the ruins of Gaza fades in. The video stops when the interactor stops smiling.

At the Emerging Technologies section of the exhibition, visitors experience a display and exhibit of interactive technologies that will change and improve our lives, such as ‘Co-Limbs: An Intuitive Collaborative Control for Wearable Robotic Arms’ and ‘Hanger Drive: Driver Manipulation System for Self-balancing Transporter Using the Hanger Reflex Haptic Illusion’.

Official Reception

The SIGGRAPH Asia 2019 Official Reception took place last evening at Brisbane City Hall's Main Auditorium, where friends, old and new, in the CG community gathered for a night of reminiscing, laughter and drinks.

Conference participant, Haomiao Jiang of Facebook, USA, spoke about his experience thus far at SIGGRAPH Asia 2019:

“This my first time at SIGGRAPH Asia and I’ve seen a lot of exciting works from graphics to machine learning. It’s great that I can learn and interact with the authors and learn from them and I think that will be especially influential for our future work."

"My personal interest is in the computational photography, graphics and machine learning, and I can see that this conference is a good place that brings them all together, so it’s cool to see a lot of people that are doing all the works in this region, also the cross discipline collaboration, also the development, so that’s really cool”
